In Kochi, the government has directed a compensation of Rs 25,000 to be paid to Sojish from Nettoor, following an order from the state human rights commission. The compensation will be deducted from the salary of the accused former SI of Panangad in three instalments, as per the directive issued by the additional chief secretary of the home department. Chairman of the commission, Justice JB Kosi, issued the order after Sojish, a Scheduled Caste member, was reportedly beaten up by former Panangad SI Vipin AB. Sojish had been taken into custody by a police team led by the former SI without proper authorization while he was in the hospital. A complaint was lodged with the commission, leading to an investigation against the SI, who received departmental action but no compensation. Despite being given an opportunity to present his case, the former SI did not file a counter-argument, prompting the government to intervene and award the compensation to Sojish.
